Venice Italy 2017 Departing by Water Taxi and Train

St. Mark's Square, St. Mark's Basilica and Campanile and Doge's Palace

After enjoying breakfast and the views from Hotel Danieli's rooftop restaurant, we walked back through St. Mark's Square (passing the Bridge of Sighs along the way) to our bed and breakfast to finish packing and catch a water taxi to the train station. Walking back through St. Mark's Square, we thought about taking a tour of St. Mark's campanile (tower), but the line had already gotten too long for us to wait, take the tour and make our train. I didn't realize at the time that I would be coming back through the square very soon.

Bridge of Sighs

Our travel plans for the day were pretty simple. We would roll our luggage to the St. Maria del Giglio ferry station, take a water taxi along the Grand Canal to the Santa Lucia train station and catch our train. We gave ourselves plenty of time. Good thing we did, too.

Once we got to the boat pier for the water taxi, we found that we could not buy tickets at that pier and we could not buy tickets on the boat; and there are hefty fines if you board a water taxi with no ticket. I left momma and Troy at the pier with our luggage and trotted all the way back to the ferry station at St. Mark's Square (its a pretty good hike) and then back to momma and Troy. I probably could have ridden the boat back to the Giglio pier, but I'm sure something would have gone wrong so I trotted my way through the now-pretty-thick-with-tourists square and made it in time to catch the next water taxi. It was a beautiful day so momma got to see all the buildings and bridges (including the Rialto Bridge and the restaurant where we had lunch) along the Grand Canal back to the train station.

Which train is ours? Santa Lucia train station.

We found the train!

And we left Venice heading for Zermatt in the Swiss Alps.
